About ZIP Code 96557

FPO AP 96557 was the military postal designation for U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay in the Philippines, which closed on November 24, 1992. The massive naval facility was the largest U.S. military installation in Asia during the Cold War, spanning approximately 262 square miles of land and water. The base closed following devastating damage from the Mount Pinatubo volcanic eruption in June 1991 and subsequent negotiations over lease renewal with the Philippine government. THIS ZIP CODE IS NO LONGER ACTIVE FOR REGULAR MAIL SERVICE.

At its peak, Subic Bay supported 40,000 U.S. military personnel, dependents, and civilian employees. The complex included the main Subic Bay Naval Base, Naval Air Station Cubi Point, and extensive ship repair facilities. The base served as the primary logistics and maintenance hub for the U.S. Seventh Fleet throughout the Vietnam War era and Cold War. Following the base closure, the area was converted to the Subic Bay Freeport Zone under Philippine administration.

The Philippine Senate's rejection of a new base treaty in September 1991, combined with the volcanic damage, led to the end of the American presence after 90 years. The last U.S. forces departed in November 1992. The former base has since developed into a commercial and industrial zone. Personnel researching historical records or veteran affairs should contact the National Personnel Records Center.
