Holiday Shipping Deadlines 2026

Every carrier publishes a last day to ship for the holidays, and every one of them is a little different: USPS aims for Christmas Day, FedEx and UPS aim for Christmas Eve, ground services depend on how far the package travels, and mail to military addresses has deadlines weeks earlier than everything else. This page collects them in one place, with the details that decide which date applies to your package. Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, Dec. 4 this year, so Hanukkah gifts need to go out by about Monday, Nov. 30 to arrive for the first night.

USPS holiday shipping deadlines 2026

The U.S. Postal Service's recommended send-by dates for delivery before Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25:

Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the territories: USPS gives no single Ground Advantage date for these. Its service expectation between the lower 48 and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands and the Freely Associated States is 10 days or more, so a Ground Advantage package to any of them should go out in early December. Priority Mail is the safer choice after that.

Military mail deadlines: APO, FPO and DPO ZIP Codes

Mail to service members and diplomatic posts overseas travels through USPS and then the military postal system, which adds days or weeks. That is why these dates are so much earlier. They apply to every military ZIP Code, which USPS groups by the first three digits:

Priority Mail Express Military Service is offered only at some military and diplomatic Post Offices. Ask your Post Office whether it reaches the address before counting on it.

How many military ZIP Codes are there?

Our current ZIP Code data lists 572 military ZIP Codes: 210 APO (Army and Air Force Post Office), 192 FPO (Fleet Post Office, for the Navy and Marine Corps) and 170 DPO (Diplomatic Post Office, for U.S. embassies and consulates). By region, 346 use the state code AE (Armed Forces Europe, Middle East, Africa and Canada), 168 use AP (Armed Forces Pacific) and 58 use AA (Armed Forces Americas). Military ZIP Codes stand for units, ships and posts rather than places on a map, which is why their “city” is always APO, FPO or DPO.

How to address military mail

Write the address exactly as the service member gives it, with no city or country name. APO, FPO or DPO goes where the city would be, and AA, AE or AP where the state would be:

Adding a country or city name can send the package into the international mail stream instead of the military one, which delays it or returns it. Packages to military addresses usually need a customs form as well; the Post Office counter or USPS Click-N-Ship fills it in with you. Use the full ZIP+4 if you have it.

FedEx holiday shipping deadlines 2026

FedEx's last days to ship for delivery by Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24, within the U.S.:

FedEx Ground takes 1 to 5 business days within the lower 48 states and 3 to 7 to or from Alaska and Hawaii, based on the origin and destination ZIP Codes. The Ground dates assume a regular scheduled pickup or a drop-off at a staffed FedEx location.

UPS holiday shipping deadlines 2026

For delivery by Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24, shipping-industry sources report these UPS dates. Confirm them on ups.com before you rely on them:

UPS has no Ground pickups on Christmas Eve, and UPS is closed on Thanksgiving (Thu, Nov. 26) and Christmas Day.

Amazon: when to order for Christmas

Amazon is a store, not a carrier, and it usually posts its own holiday cutoffs in mid-December. Until then, these are our best estimates for 2026, based on past years and this year's calendar (Christmas falls on a Friday). The date shown at checkout for each item is the one that counts.

These are estimates, not Amazon's dates. Items sold and shipped by third-party sellers often take longer, and Amazon orders to military addresses travel through USPS, so they need to reach USPS in time for its Dec. 9 military date.

International holiday mailing deadlines

USPS recommends mailing international gifts by Wed, Dec. 933 days left for First-Class Package International Service and Priority Mail International, and by Wed, Dec. 16 for Priority Mail Express International. The dates are the same for every region, from Canada and Mexico to Asia and Africa. Customs clearance can add time, especially outside major cities.

Why ground deadlines depend on two ZIP Codes

Air services have a single last day because the plane covers any distance overnight. Ground services do not: a FedEx Ground package between neighboring states may arrive the next day, while one crossing the country takes five business days, so the same service has deadlines a week apart. The deciding factor is the distance between the origin and destination ZIP Codes, which carriers turn into shipping zones. A wrong or missing ZIP Code is also the most common reason a holiday package is late: the package goes to the wrong delivery office first. If you are not sure of a ZIP Code or its ZIP+4, look it up with Find ZIP of Address before you print the label.
