About ZIP Code 35632

The University of North Alabama, the state's oldest public university, operates under dedicated ZIP code 35632 in Lauderdale County. Founded as LaGrange College on January 11, 1830 by the Methodist Church, it was the first state-chartered college in Alabama. The institution relocated to Florence in 1854, was re-incorporated as Florence Wesleyan University, and in 1872 became the State Normal School at Florence when the Methodist Church deeded it to the state. This made it the first state-supported teachers' college south of the Ohio River. The USPS assigned this unique postal designation before 2004.

The 0.06-square-mile boundary covers a portion of the 200-acre campus in Florence, the largest of four cities making up the Shoals region just north of the Tennessee River. The single ZIP+4 delivery code routes mail to university operations. Known previously as Florence State Teachers College (1929), Florence State College (1957), and Florence State University (1968), the institution adopted its current name in 1974.

The 2020 Census counted 1,096 residents within this ZIP. A median age of 19.7 years reflects the student population, with 1,078 people (98%) living in non-institutional group quarters such as dormitories. The 10% Asian population suggests campus diversity from international enrollment. Florence is the valid mailing city for this ZIP code.
