About ZIP Code 16699

State Correctional Institution at Cresson, a former medium-security state prison, held dedicated ZIP code 16699 in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The property first opened in 1913 as a tuberculosis sanatorium and later became the Lawrence Frick State Hospital for the mentally ill. Under Governor Dick Thornburgh's 1983 executive order, the facility transferred to the Bureau of Corrections and opened as a prison in 1987 after $20.6 million in renovation.

SCI Cresson closed on June 30, 2013, alongside SCI Greensburg, to facilitate opening of the newer SCI Benner Township. The state cited the facility's antiquity and rising maintenance costs. After over 100 years of institutional use, the site sat largely abandoned until Big House Produce began converting it into a hydroponic farm. The company now offers tours to urban explorers. This legacy postal designation reflects the property's former correctional use.
