FPO AE 09728 was the military postal designation for Naval Air Station Keflavik in Iceland, which closed on September 8, 2006 after 45 years of continuous operations. The base was located on the Reykjanes peninsula near the town of Keflavik, approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Reykjavik. During the Cold War, NAS Keflavik served as a critical hub for anti-submarine warfare and surveillance of Soviet naval activity transiting the GIUK Gap (Greenland-Iceland-UK gap).
At its peak, NAS Keflavik hosted over 5,000 U.S. military personnel and their dependents. The installation operated P-3 Orion patrol aircraft and supported air defense operations for Iceland under the NATO agreement. The U.S. military presence in Iceland began in 1951 under a bilateral defense agreement, and the installation became a Naval Air Station in 1961. Operations were transferred to the Icelandic government when the base closed in 2006.
Following the base closure, the U.S. maintains periodic military presence in Iceland for training and contingency operations. P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft deploy rotational for North Atlantic surveillance missions. Iceland's strategic location remains vital for tracking submarine activity and maintaining situational awareness in the North Atlantic. THIS ZIP CODE IS NO LONGER ACTIVE FOR REGULAR MAIL SERVICE.
