Its Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) radar, operational since 1961, provides early warning of intercontinental ballistic missiles approaching North America over the polar region. The upgraded Upgraded Early Warning Radar continues this mission today.
Pituffik sits on the northwest coast of Greenland in the Kingdom of Denmark, established under the 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement within the NATO framework. Currently about 150 U.S. service members are stationed there, down from a peak of 6,000 during the Cold War. The base is accessible only by air, with C-17 and C-130 aircraft providing regular resupply.
The extreme Arctic conditions present unique postal challenges. Mail routes through Newark before being transported via military airlift to Greenland. Transit times vary significantly based on weather and flight schedules, ranging from 2-6 weeks.
