FPO AE 09565 serves USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), the lead ship of the Arleigh Burke-class Aegis guided missile destroyers. Named for Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, one of the most famous destroyermen in U.S. Navy history, the ship was commissioned on July 4, 1991. In March 2021, Arleigh Burke transitioned to Naval Station Rota, Spain as part of Forward Deployed Naval Forces - Europe (FDNF-E), joining Destroyer Squadron 60.
As the lead ship of her class, USS Arleigh Burke established the design template for over 90 destroyers that would follow, making the class the most numerous surface combatant in the U.S. Navy. The ship is equipped with the Aegis Combat System, providing advanced multi-mission warfare capabilities. Arleigh Burke regularly conducts patrols throughout the Mediterranean Sea, supporting NATO and U.S. interests in the European theater.
Mail for personnel aboard USS Arleigh Burke routes through the Newark International Service Center to Naval Station Rota, Spain. The standard address format uses Unit 100271 with FPO AE 09565. As a forward-deployed ship, mail delivery may take 2-3 weeks depending on operational commitments. The ship completed its fourth FDNF-E patrol in May 2024.
