FPO AE 09550 serves USS George Washington (CVN 73), the sixth Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. Currently homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia following an extended refueling and complex overhaul, the carrier was commissioned on July 4, 1992 in a symbolic ceremony marking Independence Day. Named after the first President of the United States and first Commander-in-Chief, CVN 73 is the fourth Navy ship to bear the name George Washington.
USS George Washington served as the forward-deployed carrier at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan from 2008 to 2015, replacing USS Kitty Hawk as the only forward-deployed U.S. carrier. The ship then returned to Newport News Shipbuilding for its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH), a comprehensive maintenance period that includes refueling the nuclear reactors. The carrier is expected to return to full operational status and may deploy to either the Atlantic or Pacific Fleet.
Mail for personnel aboard CVN 73 routes through the Newark International Service Center. Use the format: Rank and Name, Division, USS George Washington (CVN 73), Unit 100148 Box number, FPO AE 09550-2873. Delivery times vary from 7-10 days when in port to 2-4 weeks during deployment. The ZIP+4 extension -2873 has been used historically for this vessel.
