FPO AE 09543 was the military postal designation for USS Enterprise (CVN-65), the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Known affectionately as 'The Big E', Enterprise was commissioned on November 25, 1961 and served for over 55 years before being decommissioned on February 3, 2017. During her service life, the carrier deployed worldwide including to the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Western Pacific, participating in major operations from the Cuban Missile Crisis through Operation Enduring Freedom. THIS ZIP CODE IS NO LONGER ACTIVE.
USS Enterprise was the eighth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name and was the longest naval vessel ever built at 1,123 feet. She was powered by eight nuclear reactors, giving her virtually unlimited range. The ship was inactivated on December 1, 2012 at Norfolk Naval Station after returning from her final deployment. De-fueling of the reactors was completed in December 2016, and Huntington Ingalls announced completion of the inactivation in April 2018.
The legacy of CVN-65 continues through the future USS Enterprise (CVN-80), a Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier currently under construction. Over 35,000 pounds of steel from the original Enterprise has been recycled and incorporated into CVN-80. Personnel researching historical records or veteran affairs related to CVN-65 service should contact the National Personnel Records Center or Navy historical archives.
