The original USS Kearsarge was a Civil War sloop-of-war that gained fame for sinking the Confederate raider CSS Alabama off the coast of France in 1864.
USS Kearsarge serves as the flagship of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group and regularly embarks Marines from the 22nd or 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The ship has participated in numerous operations including the rescue of Air Force Captain Scott O'Grady in Bosnia (1995), evacuation of Freetown, Sierra Leone (1997), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003), and Operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya (2011). In August 2005, USS Kearsarge and USS Ashland were targeted by rockets while in port in Jordan, earning Combat Action Ribbons for their crews.
