FPO AE 09517 serves USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), a Blue Ridge-class amphibious command ship and the flagship of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. Commissioned on January 16, 1971, Mount Whitney is named for the highest peak in the contiguous United States, standing at 14,505 feet in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. The ship is one of only two Blue Ridge-class command ships ever built, the other being USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) which serves as Seventh Fleet flagship in Japan.
USS Mount Whitney is permanently forward-deployed to Gaeta, Italy, making it one of the few U.S. Navy ships homeported in Europe. The ship serves as the command platform for Commander, U.S. Sixth Fleet and Commander, Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO. Mount Whitney is equipped with extensive command, control, communications, and intelligence (C3I) capabilities, including the most advanced communications suite afloat, enabling it to serve as a floating command center for major military operations throughout the European and African theaters.
Mail for personnel aboard LCC 20 routes through the Newark International Service Center. When addressing mail, use: Rank and Name, Division, USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), Unit 100296 Box number, FPO AE 09517. Due to the ship's forward deployment in Italy, delivery times are typically 10-14 days from the United States. The ship's crew of approximately 150 plus embarked staff maintains continuous operations throughout the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and surrounding waters.
