FPO AE 09516 serves USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), the seventh and final Wasp-class amphibious assault ship in the United States Navy. Currently homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, the ship was commissioned on June 30, 2001 at Naval Air Station Pensacola. Named after the Battle of Iwo Jima, the ship carries the motto 'Uncommon Valor' based on Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz's famous description of the Marines who fought in that battle.
At her keel laying ceremony on December 12, 1997, Medal of Honor recipient Captain Jacklyn H. Lucas placed his citation in the ship's hull, where it remains today. Lucas earned his medal for heroic actions as a Marine during the actual Battle of Iwo Jima. USS Iwo Jima has participated in numerous operations including Hurricane Katrina relief in 2005, evacuation of American citizens from Lebanon in 2006, and Operation Odyssey Dawn supporting the 2011 Libyan civil war response.
Mail for personnel aboard LHD 7 routes through the Newark International Service Center. Use the format: Rank and Name, Division, USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), Unit 100318 Box number, FPO AE 09516. The ship regularly deploys as the flagship of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, embarking Marines from the 24th or 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Delivery times vary from 7-10 days in port to 2-4 weeks during Mediterranean or Middle East deployments.
