Metlakatla sits on Annette Island in Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage, accessible only by boat or seaplane. This is home to the Metlakatla Indian Community, a Tsimshian village that's been here since 1887. Of the 1,562 residents, 77% are Native American (1,195 people). It's Alaska's only Native reserve, established by an act of Congress.
The island spans 139 square miles, but the addressing system includes just three streets: First Avenue, 8th Avenue, and Skaters Lake Road. That's it. Most of the island lacks street addresses entirely. Two rural carrier routes handle limited delivery, but this is a PO Box Only Zone. There's no alternative mail service anywhere on the island.
The post office maintains 224 PO Boxes for 560 households. That's a 40% adoption rate, which is low for a PO Box Only Zone. Why? Because many residents simply don't maintain PO Boxes. General delivery is available (route G001 appears in the data), meaning mail addressed to recipients without boxes can be picked up at the post office window. This is common in remote Alaska Native villages where PO Box rental fees can be a hardship.
Mail arrives by floatplane or ferry from Ketchikan, 15 miles away. There's no road connection to the mainland. The Alaska Marine Highway System serves the island, but weather delays are frequent. During storms, mail can be delayed for days.
Median household income is $69,464, above Alaska's rural average, thanks to significant government employment. 407 workers (out of roughly 800 in the workforce) are in public administration, mostly tribal government and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The community is young, with a median age of 35.2 years. Only 5% of adults have bachelor's degrees, compared to 30% statewide. Educational attainment is low, but that's typical for remote Alaska Native communities where subsistence activities, fishing, and cultural practices compete with Western educational pathways. The village has its own school system and maintains Tsimshian language and cultural programs.
Housing here is different from mainland Alaska. The homeownership rate is 64% (357 owned, 203 rented), and median home values are $160,500. But 78% of homes were built before 1939, making Metlakatla one of Alaska's oldest continuously inhabited communities. Many homes are weathered wood-frame structures from the village's founding era. With 53 mobile homes in a community of 625 total housing units, mobile homes are rare compared to most rural Alaska.
Use either a PO Box address or General Delivery:
There are no street addresses for most locations on the island.
Minimal addressing infrastructure with only 3 streets across 139 square miles. Most locations lack street addresses entirely.
ZIP Code 99926 has 1,562 residents and 560 households (average 2.78 persons per household). The median age is 35.2 years, about the same as the state (35.6) and younger than the nation (38.8). The gender split is 54.3% male and 45.7% female, which is higher than the national male share (49.1%), making this a male-majority area. Largest groups are American Indian & Alaska Native (76.5%, much higher than the state average of 15.2% and well above the national average of 1.1%) and White (9.7%, much lower than the state average of 59.4% and well below the national average of 61.6%); Hispanic or Latino residents make up 2.9%, which is much lower than the national average (18.7%), and American Indian & Alaska Native share is much higher than both the state (15.2%) and national averages (1.1%).
