Shishmaref sits on a barrier island in the Chukchi Sea, three miles from mainland Alaska and just 30 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The Iñupiaq community of 580 people has lived here for centuries, hunting seals, walrus, and bowhead whales. There's no road to Shishmaref. Supplies and mail arrive by small plane, and residents travel across the frozen sea by snowmobile in winter.
