Red Devil is a tiny Alaska Native community on the Kuskokwim River in the Bethel Census Area. With just 23 residents in 6 occupied homes, it's one of the smallest populated ZIP codes in the country. About 70% of residents are Native Alaskan, primarily Yup'ik. The village sits at the site of a former mercury mine that operated from the 1930s through the 1970s.
This is a PO Box Only Zone. There's no street delivery alternative anywhere in the 241 square mile territory. The post office maintains 10 PO Boxes for just 6 households, an adoption rate of 1.67 that shows the post office serves people beyond the village itself. River Rd is the only named street in the entire ZIP code.
Getting mail here isn't simple. Red Devil has no road connection to the outside world. During summer, residents rely on boat access via the Kuskokwim River. In winter, bush planes and snowmobiles provide the connection. Mail arrives by plane, making the post office a lifeline for this isolated community.
Of the 25 housing units in the area, only 6 are occupied year-round. Nine units are used seasonally, likely fishing and hunting cabins. The median age of 29.3 years skews younger than most rural Alaska communities. Per capita income runs about $49,400, and four residents work in public administration or other services. Nobody here has earned a bachelor's degree, which isn't unusual for remote village Alaska where traditional subsistence activities remain central to daily life.
River Rd is the only named street in this 241 square mile ZIP code, reflecting the village's location along the Kuskokwim River.
ZIP Code 99656 has 23 residents and 6 households (average 3.83 persons per household). The median age is 29.3 years, younger than the state (35.6) and significantly younger than the nation (38.8). The gender split is 65.2% male and 34.8% female, which is much higher than the national male share (49.1%), making this a male-majority area. Largest groups are American Indian & Alaska Native (69.6%, much higher than the state average of 15.2% and well above the national average of 1.1%) and White (8.7%, much lower than the state average of 59.4% and well below the national average of 61.6%); Hispanic or Latino residents make up 4.3%, which is much lower than the national average (18.7%), and American Indian & Alaska Native share is much higher than both the state (15.2%) and national averages (1.1%).
