ZIP Code Radius Finder

Every ZIP Code within a distance of any ZIP Code, measured by its real boundaries, not just its center point.

What the radius shows you

A map and a list

Every ZIP Code in the circle or ring, how far away it is and how much of it is inside, ready to copy or download.

Who lives there

People, households, income, homes, rent, age and commutes for the whole area, from the Census Bureau.

How it has changed

Compare the area with earlier years, in today's dollars.

A radius built on real ZIP Code boundaries

A ZIP Code isn't a shape drawn on a map. It's a set of mail delivery routes, so its truest outline is the area those routes cover. Our radius measures that area.

One point per ZIP Code

Most radius tools check only each ZIP Code's center. A ZIP Code that reaches well into the circle is left out when its center is outside, and one that is barely inside counts in full.

Census ZCTAs

The Census Bureau's ZIP Code Tabulation Areas are built from census blocks, not mail routes, and are redrawn only with each census. Most PO Box and single-business ZIP Codes have none.

Our ZIP Code boundaries

Built from USPS carrier routes, the lines carriers actually deliver along, and rebuilt every quarter. The spatial radius counts each ZIP Code by how much of it is inside the circle, and its people by the same share.

Need the center-point list instead? Choose Centroid under More options.

Need the boundaries themselves?

The same ZIP Code polygons, for your own maps and analysis: one ZIP Code, a state or the whole U.S., in Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML, WKT, CSV, MySQL, PostGIS or SQL Server. Instant download, with quarterly updates.

How to find ZIP Codes within a radius

  1. Enter a ZIP Code, a ZIP+4, or a Canadian FSA or postal code.
  2. Choose the distance, up to 50 miles (25 in Canada).
  3. To search a ring instead of a full circle, set Skip the middle under More options (for example, 10 to 30 miles).
  4. Read the list. Each ZIP Code shows its distance and how much of it falls inside. Download it as CSV, or copy the ZIP Codes, cities or counties.
Boundaries vs center points: a real example

Within 5 miles of downtown Nashville (37203), the boundary radius finds 31 ZIP Codes. A center-point radius finds 26.

The 5 it misses reach into the circle, but their center points are outside it. One is 37206 in East Nashville, with 44% of its area inside the circle.

Questions about ZIP Code radius searches

Because a ZIP Code is an area, and the circle can cut through it. The spatial radius measures how much of each ZIP Code's area falls inside and lists that share next to it. Within 5 miles of downtown Nashville (37203), East Nashville's 37206 is 44% inside. A radius that checks only center points would have to count a ZIP Code like that as all in or all out, and it would leave this one out, because its center is outside the circle.

By the same share as the area. A ZIP Code that is 40% inside the circle adds 40% of its residents to the total. That assumes people are spread evenly across each ZIP Code, which is close in cities and suburbs but rougher where a ZIP Code is mostly farmland, forest or water. For one ZIP Code's own Census figures, with margins of error, open its page from the list.

PO Box and single-organization ZIP Codes have no delivery area of their own. A PO Box ZIP Code serves the boxes inside one post office, and a unique ZIP Code serves one university, agency or company. They are listed by their location, so they still appear in the radius, but their residents are already counted in the surrounding ZIP Codes, so they add no people of their own.

Spatial, the default, measures each ZIP Code's boundary, so any ZIP Code the circle touches is in the list with its share inside. Centroid checks only each ZIP Code's center point, which is how most other radius tools work. In the Nashville example, 5 miles finds 31 ZIP Codes by boundary and 26 by center. Choose Centroid under More options when you need a list that matches a center-point system you already use.

Yes, up to 25 miles. Canadian FSAs, the first three characters of a postal code like M5V, are measured by their boundaries, the same way as U.S. ZIP Codes. Full six-character postal codes are points, so they are counted as in or out. Searches near the border return U.S. ZIP Codes and Canadian FSAs together: 10 miles from Blaine, Washington (98230) reaches White Rock, BC (V4B). The Census figures for the area cover the U.S. side only.

No. The radius is a straight-line distance, as the crow flies, measured from the center of the ZIP Code or postal code you enter, or from the exact latitude and longitude if you type one. Driving distances are almost always longer, so a 10-mile radius can include places that take 15 or 20 miles to reach by road. For the drive between two places, use the Distance Calculator.

ZIP Codes are updated every month from USPS data, and the ZIP Code boundaries every quarter. The boundaries are built from USPS carrier routes, the lines letter carriers actually deliver along, so they follow how mail is delivered today rather than the census blocks the Census Bureau used for its ZIP Code Tabulation Areas. The Census figures are the latest five-year American Community Survey estimates.

On this site, only a few: searches here are free but have usage limits, shared by everyone on the same network. For more, use the ZIP Codes API. A free key includes 2,500 credits a day, the API reaches 250 miles, and paid plans can run 100 radius searches in one call. You can also connect Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant to our MCP server and ask for a radius in plain English.

Yes. ZIP Code Boundary Data has the same ZIP Code polygons this radius uses, for one ZIP Code, a state or the whole U.S., in Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML and database formats, with quarterly updates. Use them to run your own radius or territory analysis in GIS software or a database. There are free sample files to try first.
